Link Project Proposal
For my 2015 junior year LINK internship I chose to volunteer at the La Plata County Humane Society (LPCHS). I chose this location for a couple reasons, it was my plan B internship, but I also had an interest in the animal shelter and non-profit organizations in general. I had never really been introduced to the operations behind a non-profit and their reliance on volunteers and donations.
I started my search for potential mentors with Daniel Walker; a local photographer who has made a name for himself through photo and video. I had initially contacted him and he informed me that he’d love to have some help however he couldn’t guarantee work during the specific three week time period set aside for LINK. This option eventually fell through due to trouble communicating while Daniel was on a ski trip in Japan. I chose then, to pursue my passion for skiing and contact Purgatory ski resort about potentially working snow grooming or terrain park design. I never heard back from either department. Zoe then informed me that Ski Patrol was taking interns so she supplied me with contact info. I sent Mitch a email asking about a potential spot for me in his mountain operation. I was pleased to see a speedy reply however he informed me that no extra help was needed, as he already had two interns. I finally requested for an email contact for the LPCHS and was able to exchange emails with Ken Hibbard. We scheduled a meeting where I was introduced to the operations and his role in the organization. We scheduled my first day of work and gave me a volunteer nametag.
I went into my internship with an open mind and a curiosity for the functions of the shelter. I did not know much about shelters or non-profits so I had no expectations. I was exited to get to experience a working experience as well as interacting with the animals. I was also hoping to interact with different parts of the organization to develop an understanding of this particular shelter as well as the functions of a non-profit and their role in civilization.
