Today was my first day of work at the La Plata County Humane Society (LPCHS). My mentor, Ken helped me get the necessary volunteer paper work filled out and turned in and we were ready to start setting up play yard schedules. There is a large fenced in 'play yard' just outside the humane society building where dogs are taken to get fresh air and some socialization with the other dogs. The schedule is created based on the different personalities of the dogs to ensure peaceful play times. After the schedule was created we spent our time retrieving dogs from inside and letting run around in the play yard. It was cool to see the different personalities of the dogs and how well Ken and other volunteers knew these animals. The rest of my day consisted of getting to know the animals and giving them a little practice interacting with humans.
